This computer-controlled editor was incredibly advanced, had a fantastic software interface – and most importantly – an incredibly precise hardware user interface, centered around a jog/shuttle wheel on the keyboard. The edit controller was what you really spent the most time with, and like modern editing systems of today – it had its own specific user interface that had to be learned and mastered. From left to right – character generator, switcher, DVE, source monitors, edit controller, program monitor, audio mixer It connected to all of these devices in various ways, and told them what to do, and when to do it – with precise, frame-accurate timing. An edit controller – which was the heart of the suite.Multiple playback tapedecks and record tapedecks.A video switcher cut between sources and did keys or layers and fades.DVE provided digital effects like repositioning and more.Various monitors showed picture or scopes.This one has a Grass Valley 2200 switcher – a rarity for me, as I preferred the Sony DVS switchers.Īs opposed to today, when everything is inside a computer and you manipulate it all there – a linear suite was truly a “suite”. Your humble author, many years ago (and with absolutely majestic hair!) helming a linear online suite.
